Sue Terrey
Felt / Ffelt
Sue’s background is in Fine Art and she brings a painterly quality to her powerful and colourful work. Her Landscapes are inspired by the beautiful and wild mid-Wales countryside. Colour is of pre-eminence in her work whether it is a painting, a drawing or a felt wall-hanging.
The mid-Wales landscape of the Pumlumon range, Dyfi valley and Cadair Idris are her inspiration and she has spent many hours being wet, being cold or, occasionally, basking in sunshine whilst observing an area which resonates at some deep level of her soul. Raw, un-peopled places with vast skies are the starting point for her work.
She has been a Felt-maker for nearly 30 years and a Painter for many more.
Her Fibre Art is usually made with a blend of colourful Merino fibre and naturally-coloured British breed fibre. Often she incorporates various yarns into her work as if they are lines of pastel or paint and depending on whether they are pre- or post-felting they react in different ways in the fibre.
In Pastels her preference is for the delicious Northumbrian-made Unison pastels; their colour range seems perfect for the bleak upland places in which she loves to roam and she finds their texture is perfect .
In her Oil Paintings she aims to create a textural quality that shows her deep feelings of love for this precious Land.
She began teaching Art and Craft classes in 1999. She worked in schools and colleges and in all manner of places: Community Centres; Art Galleries; Youth Centres and, on many occasions, outdoors at Festivals and Shows. Over the years she’s worked with all ages - 2 year-olds to 90 year-olds and all abilities. She’s taught accredited and non-accredited classes.
As a qualified teacher (Cert Ed – Post-compulsory Education & Training) she has taught Creative Textiles for Aberystwyth University, Lifelong Learning and various modules for the WEA (Workers’ Educational Association). Privately she has run many art and craft workshops and occasionally teaches Felt-making from her studio.

She started showing her own work in 2000 and has been in many group and solo exhibitions. Her work is in private collections in the UK, USA and Sweden.
